My Teaching Philosophy
The reasons I teach art and coach is because it makes me happy. There is a rewarding feeling from helping another person learn and improve a creative skill that is indescribable. I am motivated to teach because it comes so naturally to me. It is a way to inspire others the way I want to be inspired by others. By teaching I feel as though I am taking a chance to mold young people into productive citizens of society who may one day change the world. By teaching, I feel as though I am making my own mark on the world. It is the role of a teacher to not only teach information, techniques and curriculum but also to inspire, motivate and mold a child into a beautiful person. My metaphor for teaching is: The world is a canvas on which we make our mark. Our paintbrushes grow with our passion to learn. In order to allow the students to make their biggest mark on the world, it is my role to inspire and motivate their passion for learning. With this love of learning, children and young adults can do anything! I think of teaching as an avenue to reach children and show them that school is not a place for them to go during the day, it is a place that teaches them life skills and lessons.
The roles of art students in classrooms are to learn. Students are in school to learn knowledge, to learn skills, to learn about oneself, to learn about other people and cultures, to learn how the world works, and to learn how to be an independent thinker. Art students in my classroom will learn new techniques, processes, artists, art history and will learn more about themselves. Learning is like growing mentally. The more one learns the more one’s mind grows with knowledge, curiosity and drive. Although many students do not want to be in school, it is my job to engage that student long enough for them to become interested in my class. The role of a student is to learn by asking questions, by listening, and by being challenged in the room. they will use critical thinking and problem solving techniques during my art lessons. By doing this, they will also develop a creative mind. It is my philosophy that students will become more interested, engaged, and challenged with more hands-on activities. Art classrooms have the most hands-on learning opportunities, and will be able to have two and three dimensional opportunities that directly correlate to the information learned in the lesson. Students that learn will understand basic concepts, ideas, and knowledge that are necessary for them to become productive members of society, and creative and independent thinkers.
To conclude, as a future art teacher, I hope to inspire students and engage them in the art classroom. I hope to set high standards for my classroom as well as my school. I hope to become a favorite teacher to a student. I hope to influence students the way that I was influenced in my education. One day, I will be able to put all of my philosophies to use, and actually see how they work in a classroom. I hope to reach students in a new way and inspire them not only in my class, but to inspire them to love every class in which they are enrolled.
